10 Best Fusions In Steven Universe

Some Gems are just not compatible. Case in point, the monstrous Malachite who made her first appearance in the season 1 finale, "Jail Break."

Malachite is the unstable fusion of Lapis Lazuli and Jasper. Malachite is a colossal Gem with six arms, four of which are used as legs, and two pairs of eyes, Her wild hair is reminiscent of a lion's mane and her teeth are pointy.

Jasper forces Lapis to fuse with her in order to defeat the Crystal Gems, but fusing out of hatred, they constantly battle for control. Lapis proves to be the stronger personality at first, dragging Malachite to the bottom of the sea, in effect imprisoning both herself and Jasper. Eventually Jasper overpowers Lapis and breaks free.

There is a strong inference that Malachite is representative of abusive relationships. It's most noticeable in the episodes "Alone at Sea" and "Earthlings." Jasper discusses how good it felt to be Malachite and begs Lapis to fuse with her again in "Alone at Sea," to which Lapis refuses. In "Earthlings" Jasper comments no one she fuses with ever wants to stay.

Malachite made three major appearances in Steven Universe, more if you include flashbacks. Since Lapis and Jasper constantly fought for control, Malachite didn't have a separate voice actor. Her voice was Lapis and Jasper speaking in tandem.
