One of the shows best running jokes has to be the fact that no one has ever been able to name this character, and even after fourteen seasons the gag never grows old. Many fans, in fact never, want the name to be revealed as it will likely spoil the entire character's presence. It's been teased before with the Nikki Potnik clue, but that was a deliberate red herring.

The Waitress is the obsessive desire of Charlie Kelly. He stalks her, and her involvement in the show has always been centred around that. However, despite this limiting set up, she does have a lot of merit as a character. Her constant involvement with alcoholism, disdain for The Gang, and forgettable presence (in the world of the show) make her a very well fleshed out character who has plenty of worth outside of being a goal for one of the main cast.

Once Charlie ended up being with her, the joke became even more interesting, as now new grounds could be explored with her. She will always be a constant theme in the show, as she truly does feel like one of the essential aspects of the series.

Also, the fact that the actor Mary Elizabeth Ellis and Charlie Day are married in real life makes it all the better.
