10 Best Monsters Of The Week In Buffy The Vampire Slayer

2. Gnarl

Buffy Gnarl
Mutant Enemy

Gnarl is as truly horrifying and skin crawling as Buffy ever got. Everything about this demon is off the charts nightmare inducing, from its steely, cold voice to the way it skitters about like a blood thirsty Gollum.

Oh, and he feeds on human skin after paralysing his victims. So it's a villain that backs up its looks with a sinister M.O.

The thing that really makes Gnarl such a effective villain, however, is the fact that the episode - "Same Time, Same Place" - sees Willow the innocent victim of the demon's wrath. As she attempts to find her friends and figure out what's in town flaying its victims, Willow comes face to face with Gnarl and gets her paralysed and goaded by the twisted, evil figure until her friends come to rescue her.

Gnarl may not have been around for long, but the impression it left was one of horror and a lot of sleepless nights. And a nice reminder of how dark the demon world can be.
