2. Fury (2014) - Jon Bernthal

Mayhem Steven Yeun
Sony Pictures

Jon Bernthal strikes again, this time starring alongside Brad Pitt, Logan Lerman and Michael Pena in David Ayer's masterful war drama, Fury. The film follows a US tank crew during the Second World War, as they fight their way through the final days of the Western Allied invasion of Nazi Germany.

Bernthal stars as Grady "Coon-Ass" Travis, a rough but loyal soldier somewhat desensitised by a war that seemingly has no end in sight. He is merely a supporting player to Brad Pitt's commander "Wardaddy" and Logan Lerman's Norman "Machine" Ellison, but he matches their intensity and explosive acting style with every scene.

Fury makes for a tightly-wound, deeply affecting war drama made in the same vein as Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan (1998). It is not gratuitous or exploitative, but thoughtful and moving, and comes complete with a final stand-off that rivals many of Hollywood's greatest war movies.
