10 Best New Cartoons Of The Decade

6. Gravity Falls

Rick and Morty
Disney

Gravity Falls is probably the sweetest show here, and that in itself is enough to put some people off. The Simpsons was the first show to have breakout success as adult animation, and since then more gritty ‘toons have dominated popular culture.

Gravity Falls is, in many ways, a kids cartoon that adults found themselves interested in. It has the same sorts of rhythms to Disney cartoons of the late ‘90s/early ‘00s like Recess and Kim Possible, but it’s all so well assembled that it’s reached mainstream popularity.

It centres around twins Dipper and Mabel, and their uncle Stan, voiced by the show’s creator Alex Hirsch. The twins move to Gravity Falls and soon discover there’s more to the boring town than first appears.

From there, the show leads them on a series of adventures, and the sweet, often silly humour is the perfect complement for those types of episodes. Nothing is taken too seriously, but at the same time there’s clearly a lot of thought behind each frame.

Magic and mystery plays a huge part in Gravity Falls, but the show manages to keep ahold of its mythology with a laser focus.
