10 Best New Cartoons Of The Decade
5. Big Mouth
No discussion of any vaguely edgy TV show from the past is complete without someone piping up to let everyone know ‘you wouldn’t get away with that these days’. Next time someone drops this line though, send them Big Mouth’s way.
Yes, we’re in a more woke era of comedy, and like any other style of comedy, there’s positives and negatives. To argue that’s there’s actually more boundaries in place these days though, when South Park is still coming out swinging and Big Mouth is all about teenagers jizzing in their pants, is ludicrous.
Aside from its no limits approach to how it tackles sex, Big Mouth has a hugely distinctive animated style, a brilliant array of characters and a wicked sense of humour. Never has a character been so pathetic yet so valiant as Coach Steve.
The show is full of the universal language of teenage embarrassment, and weaves fantasy, imagination and down-to-earth storylines seamlessly.
As you might expect, it’s not shy about pushing boundaries, even tackling Planned Parenthood in one episode. Could we have done without the blatant Netflix product placement of Ali Wong and Queer Eye? Maybe, but at least they played good parts.
