10 Best New TV Shows Nobody Is Watching
6. UnPrisoned
Perhaps this was a mishap of timing, too much great TV coming out all at once, but Hulu’s Kerry Washington-led comedy drama seems to have dropped off the radar unfairly quickly. After decent interest at first, as the year begins to wrap up, it doesn’t seem to garner the praise it richly deserves.
UnPrisoned has a great set up with which you could run in any number of directions. Washington plays Paige Alexander, a highly successful therapist who can’t quite grapple with her own difficult childhood. Her father Edwin (the fantastic Delroy Lindo) spent the best part of two decades in prison. At the start of the season, he’s grappling with a much-changed world, as well as his relationship with a daughter he’s never managed to forge a functional relationship with.
While the premise is on the heavy side, UnPrisoned’s lightness of touch, along with the fantastic performances of its leads, keeps the show upbeat and genuinely fun, while unafraid to scratch at some serious topics. Its key gimmick - Washington’s conversations with her imagined young self - could be a mess in other hands, but the writing, and Jordyn McIntosh’s performance as young Paige, make it an enjoyable and useful concept.
