Series 3 Episode 5: Jurying
If you look at the other works of Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong, you'll notice they have a unique talent for creating the worst kind of characters in all manner of ways. The spectrum in which amoral, unethical characters can come to life is a sight to behold, and with the character of Carla, it's all the more prevalent. For one thing, she's a character with a lot of energy, and she does bring an injection of charisma to her episode.
She's also a terrifying character that highlights the irresponsible behaviours of both Jeremy and Mark. But Jeremy especially.
When Jez is called for Jury Duty, he begins an affair with the defendant on trial. Much to Mark's disapproval, the romantic in Jeremy sees the affair as a wall-breaking throwaway, but soon realises Carla isn't as innocent as he thought and later finds himself entangled with a woman who genuinely scares him.
Carla's involvement in the episode is a brilliant example of how reckless and thoughtless Jeremy can be at times, and how much of his own world he tends to live in. Once reality sets, and Jez realises what kind of monster he's let into the flat, his dismantling of the whole affair proves once again how much dumb luck follows him around everywhere he goes.
