This episode represents the beginning of great things for Parks and Recreation. After a uneven first season with lackluster ratings and mixed reviews from critics, the future of the show was very much in doubt. That's why it's so incredible that they were able to come out with such a solid episode right out of the gate as an opener for the second season. Gone is the abrasive, Michael Scott-esque Leslie Knope, and in her place is a goofy, passionate civil servant who sometimes tries too hard but always has her heart in the right place. This new characterization was far more in line with the style that Parks and Recreation wanted to embrace going forward. In this episode, Leslie mistakenly marries two male penguins in an attempt to stir up interest for the local zoo, and therefore inadvertently makes a public statement advocating for gay marriage. In addition, this is the first episode to feature Mo Collins as Pawnee legend Joan Callamezzo, which is always a plus.
