In that other iconic sitcom Seinfeld, the name for Sam Elliott's Ron Dunn would have been Bizarro-Ron. This is because much like Bizarro-Superman, Ron Dunn is the exact opposite of our Ron Swanson in every way.
Ron Dunn is the manager of the Eagleton Parks & Recreation department and is best described as a total hippie & vegan, though this information doesn't come out for a while, in which time he becomes close friends with Ron Swanson. This is before Ron Swanson then finds out who Ron Dunn really is and is disgusted with his lifestyle.
The funny thing about the brilliant Sam Elliott in this episode is that he could easily be playing the same kind of shaman-esq character that he did in The Big Lebowski, serving to highlight to the audience just how silly it all is. He and Ron aren't that different in reality, it is just superficial things that keep them apart.
The scene in which Ron Dunn convinces a completely out of it Ben Wyatt to throw his massive cheque away, whilst Ron Swanson instructs him to do the opposite because "it's money", is just brilliant to witness.
