Black Cats was the set-up, the lighting of the fire under season five.

Tommy is no longer confident that anybody around him can be trusted and feels like Michael is moving against him for his position as head of the Peaky Blinders, which he confesses to Arthur.

Since nobody can be sure that Michael isn't a rat and so he is sent to stay in the hotel with his new wife Gina and therefore keeping him out of the way of the family until it can be proved one way or another. The notion that Michael is undermining Tommy at every turn was something that was almost expected after the last season, where Michael proves himself to be a man of cunning and of schemes.

However, the gold medal of this episode goes to Oswald Mosley's meeting with Tommy and Arthur. It is nothing short of astounding as he easily gains the upper hand against Tommy with his role in Parliament, and to top it all off, moments later Bonnie Gold is brutally murdered by the Billy Boys, who are secretly working with Mosley.

As the walls close in on Tommy he is faced with so many challenges and a literal field of landmines to manoeuvre through, setting up the fact that Tommy is no longer the man he once was and is plighted by visions of his slain wife, Grace.
