10 Best Performances In Angel
4. David Boreanaz - Angel
Playing the titular vampire, David Boreanaz had one hell of a tough job. The classic traits are all still there - the brooding, the moodiness, the quietness, and the periodic moping. But on his own show, Angel went from strength to strength and proved effortlessly to be more than just the Slayer's former beau.
Throughout the show, Boreanaz has to play aspects of the character with equal conviction. He has to be heroic and likable. Endearing but selfish. Evil (as Angelus) and calculating.
As the show progresses, he shows more than once that he's just a moody vampire with a soul, looking for a reprieve for his past actions. Instead, what we get to see is a man haunted by his past and his future, trying to interact with people and form relationships whilst ridding of the evil in the world.
Outside of this doom-and-gloom, Boreanaz also has to be funny - "Smile Time" being a major stand-out - and constantly emotionally conflicted. But no matter what, whether he did something to make you hate him or acted in a way you didn't fully understand, Boreanaz made it work, and brought to life one of TV's most compelling and complex characters.
