10 Best Performances In Buffy The Vampire Slayer

7. Nicholas Brendan - Xander Harris

Drusilla Buffy
Mutant Enemy

Xander Harris has been through a lot on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. On the one hand, he's the only real "normal guy" on the show, surrounded by Slayers, werewolves, witches and demon-hunting super soldiers. On the other, he's the emotional anchor of the entire show; he's best friends with everyone - Buffy, Willow, Oz, Riley, Tara, Dawn - and though his protectiveness for his friends sometimes saw him come across as a brash and arrogant douche he's nonetheless the heart and show of the gang.

He also has one of the show's very best arcs, which is made more compelling and interesting by the fact that it's so subtle and gradual. He starts as sarcastic teen eyeing up every girl that comes his way and wanting to be the hero; he grows into a still goofy but much mature and wise man who always has his best friends' interests at heart.

All of this is possible because of the talent of Nicholas Brendan. His speech to Willow at the end of Season Six would be enough to have him on this list, but thanks to some stellar comedic timing and delivery - "To read make our English speak good", anyone? - and some brilliant moments of self-confidence, Xander is so much more than a good guy with a heart of gold - he's one of Buffy's most brilliant and consistent characters.
