Finch's efforts to install the ICE-9 virus were nail-biting, particularly when they led to his last confrontation with a fanatical Greer. The debate between the two was brimful of standout dialogue, and Samaritan's decision to sacrifice its Primary Asset represented a perfect ending for one of the show's best antagonists, with Greer remaining faithful to his digital god even as it suffocated him. Ironically, Greer’s decision to spend his breath praising Samaritan ensured that he wouldn’t be able to prevent Finch’s escape, and contributed to the destruction of the vision he died for.

The episode also featured an imaginative and poignant set of simulations based in a world without the Machine, which provided a beautiful backdrop to Finch's struggle to decide whether he was willing to end his creation's life in order to destroy Samaritan. The revelations that Carter would have lived, Reese would have died by suicide, and Root would have become a Samaritan asset were particularly powerful. It was also heart-warming to hear Finch wholeheartedly validate the Machine’s purpose and personhood as he made his choice and executed the virus.

As if that wasn't enough, .exe included Fusco's life-or-death encounter with Agent Leroux, as the detective's investigations into Samaritan's operations and killings in New York finally brought him into the crosshairs, and left him with a grim decision to make after Leroux followed in Greer’s footsteps and prioritised grandiose dialogue over practicality.
