Ironically, Greer’s decision to spend his breath praising Samaritan ensured that he wouldn’t be able to prevent Finch’s escape, and contributed to the destruction of the vision he died for.

The episode also featured an imaginative and poignant set of simulations based in a world without the Machine, which provided a beautiful backdrop to Finch's struggle to decide whether he was willing to end his creation's life in order to destroy Samaritan. The revelations that Carter would have lived, Reese would have died by suicide, and Root would have become a Samaritan asset were particularly powerful. It was also heart-warming to hear Finch wholeheartedly validate the Machine’s purpose and personhood as he made his choice and executed the virus.
