10 Best Reoccurring Jokes In Avatar The Last Airbender

5. The Mysterious Ruby-Eyed Monkey

Avatar Gang Hug
Nickelodeon

This strange piece makes its appearance rather consistently throughout the show; it's in more episodes than certain developed characters even.

Debuting in the first season within episode 9 The Waterbending Scroll in the pirates boutique, Katara stares right into its eyes and seems almost transfixed by it, later uncle Iroh purchases it for himself.

The ruby eyed monkey appears as a subtle joke throughout the show, with you being able to spot it a couple of times, but never receiving any explanation. It has some significance, and possibly some supernatural properties.

Still, the show never takes the time to establish what it is, where it came from or why it keeps appearing, which only makes spotting it even funnier.

If anything the monkey statue is an indicator of the number of cultures there are in the Avatar world, some that we don't get to see, helping to make the world-building of the show seem more in-depth.
