Rick and Morty has never been lacking when it comes to attacking pop culture and the absurdity that surrounds human beings every day.

Whether they have been hilariously mocking superhero films or classics like Jurassic Park, the animated series has always been able to deliver on some quality parodies of popular culture.

Taking that into their show, Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland have often made a point of satirising everyday occurrences and pop culture whilst finding a unique way of presenting their world view to the audience through Rick and Morty's sci-fi lens.

Parody is a notoriously hard thing to get right, and many shows fail to pull it off. However, Rick and Morty's greatest narrative strength is that it has limitless options when it comes to the writer's imagination, since the show's characters operate in a vast and infinite multiverse. This means that they can do adaptations of anything they like and justify it by using the theoretical multiverse as an explanation.

A double parody mash-up from Rick and Morty here as they take on Inception, Lawnmower Man, and Friday The 13th at the same time.

When the dynamic pair head into Mr Goldenfold's dreams with the aim of getting Morty an A-grade in maths, they soon realise that they might be out of their depth.

Whilst they continue through the layers of Goldenfold's dream state, encountering some strange sexual ideas along the way, Rick and Morty end up meeting Scary Terry, a Freddy Krueger rip-off that was probably two more minutes of screentime away from a lawsuit. Meanwhile, in reality, Morty's dog Snowball has taken over the world with his army of mech suited, super-intelligent dogs.

The episode works on every level, both as an Inception parody and a Nightmare on Elm Street homage. Scary Terry became one of the show's most beloved one-off characters and the upending reveal of his family life was brilliantly funny to watch.
