10 Best Sci-Fi TV Shows Of 2020
9. Utopia
This American reinterpretation of the fantastic 2013 British title Utopia certainly has its problems, but it impresses enough to garner attention, especially for those who wanted to see more of the original series. Developed by Gillian Flynn, this show is dark and cynical but presents a fun sci-fi romp nonetheless.
The story reflects the lives of a group of young adults who stumble upon a cult underground graphic novel. Through this discovery they find themselves thrust into the responsibility of needing to save the world, whilst being targeted by a shady deep state organisation.
The show has a lot of ties to contemporary issues, which makes it equal parts fascinating and tough to watch at times. This dark edge gives it a feeling of importance, and this is carried through very well by the performances at the centre of the series, with Rainn Wilson, Sasha Lane and Ashleigh LaThrop doing a particularly good job.
It has its flaws, and overall does feel like a slightly neutered version of its source material, but Utopia still holds a lot of the cynical charm that kept it unique in the first place. It's worth a watch, even though the show has been cancelled and won't run past its debut season.
