10 Best Sci-Fi TV Shows Of 2020
8. Snowpiercer
This series is based upon the same source material as the 2013 feature-length film adaptation of the same name. The graphic novel series Le Transperceneige, written by Jacques Lob, Benjamin Legrand and Jean-Marc Rochette is a genuinely original tale that discusses pervasive issues like class, violence and tyranny.
The series tells of a post-apocalyptic world that has become a frozen wasteland. In it, our characters live inside a perpetually moving train - known as The Snowpiercer - that keeps them safe from the ice age but forces them to live in a claustrophobic and poorly controlled society. Tensions rise as the political inequality and desperation of the lower classes leads to violence.
The show achieves a lot of what the movie did, in that it's a compelling look at a condensed form of class warfare, in an entirely literal sense. Also, the cast is full of great names such as Jennifer Connelly and Daveed Diggs, who both pull in interesting performances.
The series does suffer from feeling stretched out, as although they do an excellent job of establishing structure and motives to each episode, the overarching story is a relatively simple "us versus them" tale, and as such Snowpiercer feels unnecessarily long in a ten-episode format.
It may not be perfect, but the series is incredibly unique - just like the film - and deserves to be watched.
