Alongside The Simpsons, Matt Groening's Futurama dominated the world of animation. A more light-hearted, family show compared to many on this list, Futurama remained one of the most popular shows on TV across its fourteen year run, and consisted of seven seasons.

First airing in 1999, Futurama follows everyday man Fry who awakes in the year 2999 after being accidentally preserved for almost one thousand years. Fry works for a futuristic delivery company aboard the Planet Express ship alongside the dastardly robot Bender, one-eyed love interest Leela, and a whole host of iconic characters from the Professor and Zoidberg to Wong and Conrad. The show won a whole host of awards and has become a favourite among lovers of adult cartoons.

However, Futurama has a long history of setbacks and suffering. Fox originally cancelled the show back in 2003 after a four year run, and it was later revived by Comedy Central in 2009 for a new batch of episodes. Futurama lasted on Comedy Central until 2013 where it was ultimately cancelled once again, but for good. Not only is Futurama one of the most creative animations available, but it is also one of the best TV shows set in space.
