Perhaps featuring one of the most iconic and recognizable characters in TV history, not just in the science-fiction genre, in Captain Jean-Luc Picard, of course Star Trek: The Next Generation would feature on this list of the best TV shows set in space. First airing in 1987, the show spanned a remarkable 178 episodes over a seven year period, and then went on to produce four additional feature films until 2002.

Star Trek: The Next Generation is arguably the pick of the bunch when it comes to the Star Trek sequel shows. This is mainly down to their memorable supporting characters such as Data, Geordi La Forge, Worf, and Riker. These characters have created a lasting legacy, as even non-viewers of the show will recognize them.

The series has created some of the most influential moments in TV history, not just the Picard facepalm that has become an internet meme. From the introduction of the Borg, to Data receiving the gift of laughter, to Picard's flute, and the poignant poker game ending, Star Trek: The Next Generation has just as much heart and soul as excitement and spectacle.

Fast forward to 2020, and Picard has returned once again with his own show. However, it will never beat the original classic.
