10 Best Slasher Horror TV Shows

2. Chucky

American Horror Story 1984
SyFy

The only film-inspired show of this list that serves as a direct sequel, Chucky follows 2017’s seventh instalment Cult Of Chucky, and retains Brad Dourif as the voice of the eponymous Good Guy doll - alongside featuring various other actors from the film series reprising their roles. The TV show primarily follows 14-year-old Jake Wheeler, who unknowingly purchases Chucky a few years following the events of the prior film to use within an art project, only to later discover the doll is, as viewers know well, possessed by the soul of a notorious serial killer.

Chucky deviates from the vast majority of slasher media by making the killer (and his unwitting teenage sidekick) the primary point of view character. This means the typical whodunnit element is missing, but for a franchise where the nature and identity of the killer has been public knowledge for years, this angle only serves to benefit the show by offering a rare flipside to the narrative that is confidently carried by the performances of both leads.

Alongside being full of some of the best kills and thrills, Chucky embraces the coming-of-age themes inherent to a young protagonist with a bloody yet distinctly humorous reality that calls to mind the likes of Carrie. The exaggerated representation of the teenage experience, where bullying and sexuality questioning sit side by side with homicidal impulses, makes Chucky one of the most successful versions of the Child’s Play story to date, and one slasher fans simply must not miss out on.
