5. Pillar Of Garbage
Pillar Of Garbage, sung by fictional band Natalie Is Freezing (led by real life singer Lisa Loeb) is a brilliant send up of ‘90s alternative rock. Though we never get to hear the full song through, there’s enough for it to qualify here.
Spoofing the likes of Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Nine Inch Nails, Pillar Of Garbage has a lot of seemingly deep and wounded emotional lyrics, which quickly descends into ridiculous metaphors and similes. Loeb’s dulcet tones overlayed with Britta’s terrible singing is absolutely hilarious.
When we just get Loeb’s Natalie Is Freezing though, it’s actually a pretty good song, despite the awful lyrics.
Her voice is much softer than the typical band Natalie Is Freezing is supposed to be, even compared to female counterparts Hole or Garbage. Given that Elroy’s relationship with Julie plays a crucial part in the story, that’s for the best. While it’s maybe not a like for like parody without the loud, strained vocals, the more ethereal quality definitely works in its favour.
‘I’m flying overhead and buffalo are falling dead inside’ is will forever be the pinnacle of songwriting.
