From the very beginning of the show, Jackson Teller was the heart in a show surrounding criminals and law breakers. Had it not have been for his journey to create a better life for his sons, it's easy to think that the MC would have spiralled into something audiences would have struggled to relate to.

Despite already having to go through hell to try and get the Sons of Anarchy and his family in a better place, life kept throwing curveballs for Jax, the biggest of which was the death of his wife and mother of his kids.
