10 Best Star Trek Characters Only In One Episode
5. Kashyk
"Counterpoint" is considered by many fans to be one of Voyager's very best episodes. The highlight of the episode being the cat and mouse relationship between Janeway and her opposite number, Inspector Kashyk, who is basically a space Nazi hunting for telepaths.
The set up of the episode is pretty simple. Voyager has to get through a region of space run by fascist pricks who've decided to hunt and persecute telepaths. Janeway, having some telepathic crew members and generally hating Nazi scum, decides to underground railroad as many telepaths as she can out of these jerk's space. However she has a shrewd and capable enemy in Kashyk, who is determined to ferret out her scheme and destroy the wormhole leading out.
Kashyk has earned a place among the great villains of Star Trek. He's a ruthless and calculating enemy but he's not one dimensional. There are layers to him and it is hard to tell what is truth, what is a lie and what is something in between.
He and Janeway match each other move for move. There's a romantic element to their rivalry, which like the character himself is a mixture of lies and truth. There's a sadness to it in that he and Janeway would actually make a good couple if only he weren't a dirty space Nazi. But because he is she has to out fox him and does so magnificently.
The great thing about this character is that by the end of his story the audience doesn't need to see him again. The episode has a complete arc which builds him up and perfectly delivers him to a satisfying conclusion. We get just the right amount of Kashyk and not one ounce more or less than needed.
