10 Best Star Trek: Voyager Episodes

9. Death Wish

Voyager Janeway Tuvok

Q simply didn't work during his sole appearance on Deep Space Nine, which leads to the character never returning there again. A deleted line from Death Wish has him referring to 'that dreary station' and it honestly suits the clash of worlds between the two. Writing the character into Voyager was a gamble.

Quinn, played by guest star Graham Gerritt, is another member of the Q. He wants to die, which is antithetical to the Continuum. Imprisoned in a comet, Voyager rescues him and gets more than she bargained for. A full court hearing ensues when Quinn asks for asylum, while John de Lancie's familiar Q argues against.

Q and Janeway have a very different rapport to the one he enjoyed with Picard. John De Lancie and Kate Mulgrew's had a long-standing friendship, allowing them to bounce off each other well in their scenes together. A cheeky cameo from Jonathan Frakes adds to the fun of the episode, though after everything, Quinn becomes human.

Despite showing him that life can be meaningful while it is lived, Quinn takes poison and sees his plan through to the end with the audience invited to decide for themselves as to whether they agree with the decision or not. But despite the shock of the ending, perhaps the biggest surprise in the whole equation is that Q is the one who helps him to do it. He might be new to the crew of Voyager, but long-term viewers know him well enough to recognise this is an otherwise uncharacteristic act of compassion on his part, perhaps signifying how much he's grown since his days of tormenting Picard in The Next Generation.
