5. All Hell Breaks Loose Part 1 & 2

Okay, so it's a little bit of a cheat to roll both of these episodes into one but it's virtually impossible to separate them. Season 2's two-parter finale tied up Supernatural's first major story arc in spectacular fashion, with Sam and Dean finally killing the demon who murdered their parents, while also getting to the root of Sam's powers and teasing his potential descent into darkness.

That only came after a traumatic first episode though, with Sam being killed, leading Dean to sell his soul in order to bring his brother back to the land of the living. Though death would later come to lack any real weight, here it was unprecedented for either of the two to be offed, and in two short episodes you really felt the gravity of the loss, as well as Dean's desperation (and perhaps selfishness) to trade his life for Sam's.

Throw in a proper farewell for John, who returns for a single scene to save his sons one final time from beyond the grave, and you have both the perfect wrap up to one storyline, and a brilliant starting point for another.
