6. Sacrifice

While a lot of fans (myself included) readily admit that Supernatural's golden era was the first five seasons, it's still capable of producing top-tier episodes (and even arcs) that can rival those glory days. Season 8 in particular was home to a string of stellar episodes, especially in its latter half, culminating in an epic, heartbreaking finale that ended in all of the angels falling from Heaven.

One again, the fate of the world rested on Sam and Dean, but it was the latter who was forced to bare the biggest burden. Tasked with completing a ritual that would close the gates of Hell, the younger brother is all up for going through with it, despite it being guaranteed to kill him. Of course, Dean won't let him sacrifice himself again, and the two have a heartfelt confrontation where Sam admits he needs to do it in order to pay his brother back for constantly letting him down.

The scene is the perfect example of how Supernatural makes even the grandest, world-changing events personal, always tying them back into the theme of family. The drama is some of the best the show has ever produced, all performed against the spectacular imagery of Heaven's army coming crashing down to Earth.
