"Well. That was unexpected." That was me, out loud despite watching the episode alone, when the end credits rolled for "Rains of Castamere". I hadn't read the books, nor do I ever plan to, so I sure didn't see a grisly mass murder coming. It wasn't worthy of Vine or YouTube, but I was surprised. That's what Game of Thrones gives you: the ability to be surprised. The program isn't afraid to shake things up and leave bodies stacked to the skies, because the source material is strong and the story is written with confidence. The episode itself was the usual steady offering from DB Weiss and David Benioff, slamming the customary penultimate episode gut-punch to viewers that we've all come to dread but expect. But that ending? Wow, that ending. Why It's On The List: Do you really need to ask? Watch it below, and try to keep it together.
