10 Best TV Show Cold Opens Ever
3. Brooklyn Nine-Nine - DFW
If you've never seen Brooklyn Nine-Nine before (which you should, before it's too late), you probably still know this scene, as it became huge and was tossed around the internet continuously. It brought a lot of attention to the show and easily ranks as the series' most iconic, catchy and hilarious cold open.
This scene showed Jake and a civilian looking across a line-up of criminals. The civilian that the criminal sang I Want It That Way, by the Backstreet Boys when committing the crime. Then, just like the professional he is, Jake ordered each perp to sing a line from the song, ending in a chorus of singing and outpours of laughter from the audience.
However, after Jake is overwhelmed with happiness over the song, the poor victim states, "it was number five, number five killed my brother", with Jake suddenly remembering the severity of the job, and delivering a perfect punchline.
The segment captures what gives Brooklyn Nine-Nine its spirit in one concise sitting. You get Jake's goofy personality, the connection to pop culture, the originality of the jokes, and a great eye into the series' dark humour.
They definitely got their money's worth from the Backstreet Boys for this one.
