It's been many years since Archer was a straight-up spoof of the spy genre. The FX animation has been rebooting and de-booting for as long as most fans can remember, but its latest facelift looks set to be the most dramatic.
After spending last season within the protagonist's film noir-lampooning coma dream, Archer Season 9 is heading to Danger Island to reimagine its cast as staff on an island resort, who also happen to run a charter plane service.
From the sound of things, the spy setting will feel like a distant memory, but the characters' personalities will remain unchanged. Archer, for instance, will retain his mother issues and penchant for no-strings sex and drinking binges, while Pam will remain the group's heaviest hitter. Mad scientist Krieger will undergo the most dramatic shift, taking on the role of Archer's wise-cracking parrot.
The decision to chop and change between formats hasn't been popular with every Archer fan, but in truth, the show would have become stale years ago if the showrunners hadn't attempted to take it in new directions.
Season 9 is yet to be given a more specific release date than '2018', but one thing's for certain: it will be back for season 10 too.
