10 Best TV Shows Of 2017 (So Far)

8. Catastrophe

Catastrophe Season 3
Channel 4

Catastrophe is one of the best two-handers on television: it's performed by a lead duo who stand out on their own but also perfectly complement each other and, while it is pitched as a comedy, can do drama with the best of 'em.

This was never more evident than in Season 3, which included a storyline on Rob's alcoholism (a brutal, true-to-life turn from Rob Delaney, with echoes of his own past addiction) and another on Sharon's father dying. These were dealt with in a serious, affecting manner, and Delaney in particular gave an incredibly moving performance.

And yet, despite the darkness, Catastrophe never lost sight of the need to find humour in whatever life throws at us. It continues to be the show that gets adult relationships right more than any other, in ways that vary from sweet to total gross-out comedy, and it can make you laugh and cry within the same episode.

It helps that it has the late Carrie Fisher among its supporting cast, and her wit is as razor sharp as ever when she does show up here, but the whole series is a testament to the quality of Delaney and Sharon Horgan's writing and acting, which feels almost too painfully real at times.
