10 Best TV Shows That Only Got One Season
1. Firefly
After Joss Whedon's success with Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the spin-off, Angel, fans couldn't wait to see what he would do next. And his next piece of work was meant to be his modus operandi; an epic seven-season space western called Firefly.
Despite being considered one of the greatest shows of all time, the executives cancelled it for being "too dark". Also, viewers couldn't follow the story since the episodes were originally aired out of order. (The pilot episode was one of the last episodes to air during the original run.) In hindsight, the show didn't stand a chance.
What makes Firefly's cancellation more frustrating is Whedon had set-up huge story arcs for future episodes. Whedon has a reputation for waiting years for a storyline to pay off. (In Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dawn's existence is implied two years before the character officially debuted.) Although Firefly hinted that there were much bigger stories to come, they never saw the light of day.
Whedon tried to give the Firefly a definitive conclusion with Serenity; a movie that is a direct continuation of the series. Despite being praised by critics, it bombed at the box office.
