10 Best Vikings Deaths

As Vikings edges closer and closer to the release of the second half of its sixth season, it's important to remember whose grizzly ends got us here.

Vikings does an excellent job of balancing its inspirations from real-world history and giving satisfying payoffs to character deaths. More importantly, the deaths of those not already dictated by history feel earned in some way, whether it be through heroic sacrifice or brutal vengeance.

What screenwriter Michael Hirst excels at, is creating such bold and interesting characters from just their presence that even side characters get their moment to shine. Some characters may have only been introduced moments earlier, but they left such a lasting impression that their death made just as much of an impact as losing one of the show's main cast.

Whether it was a one-off extra or a beloved fan favourite, death in Vikings is always presented with a touch of celebration amongst the sadness. Due to the nature of Viking culture, fans can't help but cheer with joy if someone happens to die in spectacular fashion.

After all, death plays a huge part in the series and in the Norse religion. With several hints and references to a more supernatural world within the show, viewers are left reassured that no matter how gory the death, the recently-departed will soon be partying in Valhalla with Odin himself.

Looking back, here are the ten most satisfying and glorious deaths from Vikings. Be aware though, this will contain numerous spoilers for all of the show's six seasons.

Jarl Borg was one of the series first main antagonists after his debut in Season 1.

Borg acted as a sort of rival to the ever-ambitious Ragnar who was rising quickly through the ranks. He managed to persuade Ragnar's own brother, Rollo to join him in undermining Ragnar and King Horik.

Despite Ragnar putting an end to the battles between Borg and Horik, there was always that underlying sense of jealousy and resentment within Borg. The three ended their disputes by agreeing to go raiding in England, but when it came time to set sail Horik decided to leave the ever-treacherous Borg behind.

This went about as smoothly as you might expect, with Borg raiding Ragnar's home of Kattegat as soon as the pair left. Unfortunately for him, Ragnar returned from England safe, sound, and vowing for revenge. With the help of Lagertha and his son Bjorn, Ragnar retook the town.

Defeated, Jarl Borg was soon to become the first person on the show to be executed by the legendary blood eagle tradition. The method included Ragnar stripping the flesh from his back then breaking his ribs outwards to form "wings". All of this was done while the victim was still alive.
