10 Better Call Saul Moments That Broke TV
1. The Gene Takovic Story
Finally, we have the conclusion to Saul Goodman's story as a whole—his fate as Gene Takovic. The series uses little snippets of Saul's new life as Gene in order to showcase that no matter how clever or how perfect his scams might be, there is no happy ending for the wicked.
After seeing Saul's life post-Breaking Bad for the first time, the viewers were anxious to see what would happen to him. Speculations were abound, with each new prediction being more depressing and tragic than the last.
But was Saul's fate really that terrible? Well, just as some viewers predicted online, Gene's old impulses came back to haunt him, and he was eventually caught and sent to jail. However, ironically, it is behind bars that Jimmy becomes truly free.
In the final episode, "Saul Gone", Jimmy is on trial for his collaboration with Heisenberg. He manages to bring his own sentence down to seven years, but then, in an almost "Crime and Punishment" sort of fashion, he has a change of heart and suddenly comes clean about every bad thing he has ever done. Naturally, his confession guarantees him a life sentence, but in exchange, Jimmy finally rids himself of all the guilt he was forced to bear in his life. After he finishes his confession, he looks back at Kim sitting in the back of the courtroom, and although his face shows concern, the audience can tell he does not regret his decision.
Though not as intense and action-packed as the rest of the series, the ending did a great job of wrapping up Better Call Saul. It delivered a powerful message in a similar vein to Breaking Bad and provided a fitting closure for one of the greatest characters in television history.
