10 Big Differences Between New And Classic Doctor Who

3. Welshness

Wales provided the backdrop for the Death Zone on the Doctor's home planet of Gallifrey in 1983's The Five Doctors. Little did anyone suspect at the time that this nation was to play a pivotal role in Doctor Who in the 21st century. Since the mid-Noughties, the show has made its home in Cardiff and the surrounding areas. Before that, the TARDIS had to make do with whatever the team could conjure up in the south east of England. The Welsh landscape, however, offers a range of scenery comparable to the use of New Zealand in the Lord of the Rings saga. The Time Lord's exploits have moved way beyond mere quarries and scrubland, though. The streets of Cardiff have doubled for London and sights such as the striking Southerndown beach became immortalised as Bad Wolf Bay. The future of the brand is now inextricably linked with the proud heritage of Wales, serving as a pioneering figurehead for the BBC's ambitions to expand major league productions outside the capital. It's now lightyears away from the hurried Classic Series shoots conducted at TV Centre, that's for sure!
