10 Big TV Shows That Were Cancelled This Year (And Why)

4. Gotham

Gotham Bruce
Fox

Gotham has long been fighting cancellation at Fox, with poor reviews only compounding the ratings slide that has seen the show lose a significant chunk of viewers year upon year, but it's always just squeaked by.

It has now run out of chances, though, albeit with a means of actually ending things. Fox were set to can the series entirely, but instead made an 11th-hour decision to cancel it after the impending fifth season, which will feature a dramatically reduced run of just 12 episodes to bring everything to an end.

The show has especially struggled since moving to a Thursday night slot on Fox, dropping to an average viewership of 3.6m in Season 4 - down from 4.52 - and just 1.2m in the 18-49 year old demographic. Gotham still has a lot of story left to tell, with its Bruce Wayne a long way off from being a finished version of Batman, and the earlier-than-expected end means there'll be a massive time jump in the series finale - of around 10 years - to properly end things.
