10 Biggest Idiots In Star Trek

10. Edward Larkin (Star Trek: Short Treks)

Before we commence it's worth acknowledging that Short Treks is absolutely the correct place for idiots in Star Trek. Quickly in, quickly out, pausing just long enough to luxuriate in their idiocy and roll your eyes. before never ever having to see them again. Enter, then; Lieutenant Edward Larkin, Protein Specialist aboard the USS Cabot.

His motivations were certainly noble, at least. Wanting to help the planet of Pragine 63 avoid almost certain starvation, he suggested genetically modifying one of their indigenous species - the tribbles - to reproduce at a higher rate and, thus, become a more viable source of food. However, upon having his request denied, he took matters into his own DNA and ran the experiments anyway.

Now I'm not sure if you've ever seen any of the subsequent Star Trek Tribble episodes, but their rate of reproduction is, as a result of this, the stuff of legend. Being born pregnant they multiply and multiply until they saturate their surroundings... with hilarious consequences!

Except this time they quickly consume the ship, forcing the crew to evacuate before their sheer mass destroys it from the inside. The only casualty? Lieutenant Larkin, who proudly declares that he is "not dumb" before being engulfed in a tidal wave of fur.

John Kirk is a Teacher-Librarian and currently a History/English Teacher with the Toronto District School Board. But mostly, John teaches Geek. Comics, Sci-Fi (Notably Star Trek), Fantasy and Role-Playing and table-top games all make up part of John’s repertoire, There is a whole generation of nerds-in-embryo who rely on him to make sense of it all, to teach that with great power comes great responsibility, that the force will be with us always and that a towel IS the most useful thing to have in one’s possession. When John isn’t in the classroom, he can be found in his basement writing comic reviews for www.popmythology.com and features for Roddenberry Entertainment's www.1701news.com.
