Before Star Trek: Discovery began airing, Rejoined is generally the first thought that would spring to mind when one thinks of LGBTQIA+ moments in Star Trek. This fourth-season episode of Deep Space Nine was notable for depicting the first same-sex kiss in the franchise, with Terry Farrell and Susanna Thompson playing Jadzia Dax and Lenara Khan respectively.

The Dax and Khan symbionts had been married when inhabiting former hosts, and still have strong feelings for each other. However, Trill society has rules that prevent symbionts from continuing relationships when joining with new hosts, so as to avoid a hierarchical class, constantly going on to stay together through time.

The episode notably features no discussion on the fact that there are two women kissing. All of the concerns that Dax's friends' voice relates to the trouble she may find herself in with Trill society for the other taboo. Now the entire audience knew what the true message was behind the episode and, predictably, there were complaints and letters sent to the studio. The episode was released in the mid-90s so, for the time in which it was released, it was a fairly big gamble - one that absolutely paid off.
