After a five-month break, the second half of season four got off to a very rocky start. The episode goes full-meta and left a lot of fans feeling like they were the butt of the joke.

A large amount of the show's fan base has long ached for a deeper dive into the lore behind the show. The trailer for season four seemed to hint at their wish being granted, but then came Never Ricking Morty.

The confusing episode is grounded around a train, conducted by the Story Lord. It shows various cutaways that expand on previous stories, as the trailer suggested, but this is where fans started to get upset.

All the moments within the trailer, which fans had gotten excited over, were played out in this one episode. The show then takes things one step further, breaking the fourth wall when Morty asks "is any of this canon?", to which Rick replied "it could have been".

The whole episode seems to be a slap in the face to hardcore fans, who are desperate to see the Rick and Morty universe open up. Yet when their prayers are finally answered, it was all quickly taken away and reduced to a meta joke.
