10 Biggest Secrets Revealed In Star Trek Novels

1. The Early Years - The Autobiography Of Kathryn Janeway

Star Trek: Voyager was fantastic for showing the audience Kathryn Janeway as she was, though it was not always the best at showing them how she came to be there. While her backstory was discussed in Caretaker, Coda, and several other episodes, it is in Dr. Una McCormack's The Autobiography Of Kathryn Janeway that it is truly explored.

Again, while the canon of a book like this is debatable, the simple fact that Kate Mulgrew herself narrates the audiobook seems enough to secure its place in Trek history. The readers get to find out exactly how deeply Janeway and Mark were in love before she took command of the ship. Losing him was a far greater sacrifice than the show suggested.

The Chief Medical Officer who is killed as Voyager enters the Badlands is given much deeper exploration as well, though the true appeal here centers on Janeway's journey through the Academy, through her first postings, and the struggles she faced with commanding officers who were not the easiest to get along with. There is also the revelation that she knew Tom Paris long before he became Voyager's pilot.

This novel is essential reading (or listening) to truly understand the character of Captain Janeway.
