Dr. Una McCormack is an author who has been releasing excellent tie-in novels for the Picard and Discovery-eras of Star Trek, though she has also worked on another entry that is on this list. When it came time to release the prequel to Star Trek: Picard, she created an in-depth look at what exactly happened before the Synth attack on Mars.

If there is a valid criticism against the first series of Picard, it is that there was a lot of talking 'about' the attack, without actually showing it, or explaining the details. The audience discovers why it happened, but the actual cost of the day is left a little in the dust. The fate of one person, in particular, Geordi LaForge, is barely mentioned in the show.

Zhaban does note that LaForge is alive, but that is all. In The Last Best Hope, we discover how and why. He was off-world at the time of the attack, already dissatisfied with Bruce Maddox's work. Through Geordi's eyes, the reader sees the true human toll of the day. Many highly talented engineers were killed, leading to the decision to call off the rescue mission.

The novel also goes a way to humanizing Admiral Clancy, who simply did not get enough development in the series. Her actions make far more sense when the reader discovers that she is constantly facing the threat of secession from the Federation worlds who are profoundly opposed to helping the Romulans at all.
