When Yahoo! picked up Community for its much wished for sixth season, fans were ecstatic. The show's creator Dan Harmon made all sorts of lofty promises about a return to the show's roots: no more wacky storylines, no more bizarre caricatures, and the long-absent exterior of Greendale was set to make a triumphant return. What fans ultimately got was something of a mixed bag. Yvette Nicole Brown was gone, and season five's Buzz Hickey was also notably absent. On top of that, John Oliver's Professor Duncan was nowhere to be seen. Though the show picked up towards the end of the season, and capped off the series in a frankly beautiful way, much of season six struggled to find its identity, unsure what the reason for its existence was, but just sort proud to be alive. Though there were a few more exterior shots, and a few comparatively normal episode plots, the tone of the show was as bizarre as ever, and certain characters seemed trapped in a sort of limbo between who they had become and who the fans wanted them to be. The sixth season of Community wasn't bad by any stretch, but it was disappointing not just in terms of its content, but also because it failed to really benefit Yahoo, who claim to have lost forty-two million dollars on Community and two other original shows that aired on its streaming service Yahoo! Screen.
