The Voice is a televised talent show that claims, unlike rival shows The X Factor and American Idol, it doesn't care about gimmicks and sob stories: it is purely about the singing.

Anyone who has watched The Voice knows that this simply isn't true. The Voice is purely about one thing and one thing only: those big red buttons.

When the judges like what they hear, they push one of these button and their chair does a little spin. This is the driving force of the show and the main draw for viewers, and the judges know it. This may explain what will.i.am was thinking when he took out a marker and drew a little face on his button: he knew that people were only tuning in to watch those buttons get pushed. They are the true face of The Voice, not him or any of the other judges.

Unfortunately for will.i.am (whose full name is William H. Macy), this led to a magnificent blunder. As a contestant was singing and failing to impress the judges, will.i.am attempted to clean a little smudge on his button's new face. Pressing down too hard, he accidentally pushed it. After the chair did its cool spin, will.i.am kindly explained to the contestant that he only picked him by accident, but as per the rules, he would take him on as his protégé anyway.

Thanks will.i.am! Very cool!
