From his introduction in 1975, Davros has always been presented as a nasty piece of work attempting to conquer the universe with his own twisted set of ideals.

The creator of the Daleks is one of the ultimate big-bads in all of Doctor Who, which is why this episode's decision to humanise him was so controversial.

In The Witch's Familiar, the Twelfth Doctor ends up chatting with the decrepit scientist, and the two share a surprisingly tender moment. Davros reveals that he is dying, and appears to express regret at the life he has lived. He even sheds a few tears - an unthinkable concept for such a dastardly villain. Audiences were stunned, and so was the Doctor, who repeatedly expresses confusion at just what the hell he's witnessing.

This all turns out to be a giant ruse to siphon off some of the Doctor's regeneration energy, but there was a point where it really looked like one of the most evil beings in all of Who was actually showing some remorse.

Some people loved this twist on the character and hoped that Davros was being genuine, while others thought it went against everything he stood for. Regardless of your stance, it was totally unexpected to see him get all weepy!
