6. Data's Cake

Dreams can get pretty abstract and random sometimes, so when Data experimented with dreaming for the first time, it was clear that we were in store for some crazy stuff. Still, nothing could have prepared us for the weird things floating around in Data's subconsciousness.

In the dreams, he opened a door on his torso to find a rotary telephone, he was attacked by construction workers in an Enterprise corridor after shrieking a high-pitched sound, and he watched as Dr. Crusher sipped from a straw attached to Riker's head. Yet, the weirdest part was when Data was forced to cut into a cake with the face of Counselor Troi.

This scene is one of the most surreal in Trek. Of course, we learned later that Data's dreams were being influenced by interphasic creatures feeding on the Enterprise crew. He was subconsciously aware of the creatures, but needed to dream in order to understand these thoughts. It's really interesting how Data's mind constructed an analogy of the creatures feeding on the crew by forcing Data to slice into a cake of his friend.

This episode was incredibly well-written, but, without context, the Deanna Troi cake (and, to a lesser extent, the other dream sequences) will definitely leave you dumbfounded.

Fortunately, Deanna got some payback at the end of the episode when she and Data dined on a delicious Data cake.
