In the Discovery episode An Obal For Charon, Jett Reno had a conversation with Stamets about the differences between a typical warp drive and Stamets' displacement-activated spore hub drive.

Reno started by mocking the spore drive and calling Stamets 'a guy who thinks he can run a ship on mushrooms that I pick off my pizza'. Stamets was quick to argue that the spore drive was not only a vastly faster method of propulsion, but also an eco-friendly alternative to dilithium.

As Stamets explained, most people don't think about how many worlds have been destroyed by dilithium mining and how many battles were fought for these valuable crystals (something which became very clear after The Burn). He even went as far as to compare dilithium dependency to humanity's past dependency on fossil fuels, which also caused untold pollution and destruction.

Stamets believed that the spore drive would replace warp drive, just as solar power and other forms of renewable energy replaced the harmful pollutants of the past. This is an interesting perspective on dilithium that we've never really heard before, and it makes you wonder if humanity will repeat the mistakes of its past by relying on a limited resource.
