10 British Horror TV Shows You've Probably Never Seen

6. The Enfield Haunting

Dead Set
Sky Living

This three-part series was based on the same British haunting that The Conjuring 2 used as a basis for its tale. Starring Timothy Spall and Matthew Macfadyen as paranormal investigators, the pair examine the case of a potential poltergeist in a council house in the late 1970s.

Drawing on Guy Lyon Playfair's book This House is Haunted, as well as recordings and witness statements, the show crafts an air of verisimilitude which lends its supernatural occurrences authenticity seldom seen in television ghost stories. A powerful sense of dread accompanies investigators Playfair (Macfadyen) and Grosse (Spall) as they look into the events at the Hodgson house.

The show gained the highest ratings commissioning channel Sky Living had ever seen, with critics lavishing rave reviews all round. If you are looking for an effective, well executed chiller than can crawl under your skin this side of Halloween, The Enfield Haunting is the one for you.

Interestingly, there's some degree of consistency between this drama and previous entry Ghostwatch; both present similar haunting cases. An intriguing double bill is to be had by combining the two, back to back.
