Dead Set

Before Black Mirror, there was Dead Set - Charlie Brooker's horror-satire about a zombie apocalypse from the perspective of contestants in the Big Brother House. To some, just Big Brother itself was horrible enough, so the addition of the undead could put them over the edge, though that is rather the point.

Dead Set envisions a zombie pandemic overrunning the country before the residents of the latest series of Big Brother can be evacuated, resulting in the house becoming a sort of refuge from the undead. Featuring a number of real former housemates in cameo as well as the fictional housemates, plus a zombie Davina McCall, Dead Set is an intelligent, often funny horror idea executed well despite budgetary constraints. Discerning zombie aficionados should note that these are fast zombies à la 28 Days Later rather than the classic shuffling Romero variety.

Given the critical and popular acclaim afforded to Black Mirror, Dead Set can often be overlooked, forgotten in comparison with Brooker's arguably more successful anthology series. However, those who do seek out Dead Set are unlikely to be disappointed.
