10 British Horror TV Shows You've Probably Never Seen

4. The Stone Tape

Penned by Nigel Kneale, most famous for his controversial Nineteen Eighty-Four adaptation for the BBC and sci-fi classic Quatermass And The Pit, this blend of science fiction and horror revolves around researchers at a converted Victorian mansion, which is now a research facility.

With inexplicable phenomena abounding, the team of scientists attempt to discover if the stones of the building act as a sort of recording medium, retaining traces of past events (the quite literal 'stone tape' to which the title refers).

Starring Michael Bryant and Jane Asher, The Stone Tape was partly inspired by a visit writer Nigel Kneale took to the BBC's Research and Development department, then situated in an old Victorian house in Surrey. As the researchers develop their hypotheses and investigate, they stir up more malevolent forces. This mixture of the scientists at work and the supernatural elements is a true strength of The Stone Tape, allowing the curiosity of the scientists to invite further scares, as things go from bad to worse in a progressive escalation that feels natural.

The critical acclaim the broadcast received has never diminished, with The Stone Tape being hailed as one of the finest genre works made for British television.
