8. Grantchester
Set during the 1950s, Grantchester follows the adventures of local vicar Sidney Chambers who, alongside Inspector Geordie Keating, investigates murders in the town of Grantchester. Initially following a plot-of-the-week formula, Grantchester evolved during its second season to a more arc-based set up and it certainly paid off.
As we’ve come to expect from the best television series, there is plenty of conflict in Grantchester. Sidney may be a vicar, but he’s far from perfect; his constant battle with his beliefs raise some important issues, and are the basis for some great conversations between himself and his housekeeper.
